The son of
Martha and
Todd Patterson, Elliot was raised by his parents in their home on the outskirts of Salt Lake City. From a young age he was taught the teachings of
the Decreator, however, was unaware that he was, in fact, the living embodiment of the
Unwritten Book and would bring about the end of the word; on the contrary to this, Martha would tell him that he would grow up to be a hero.
Kept isolated and with no friends other than his parents, they would bond making renovations on a car.
On his 18h birthday, he watched in horror as his mother used a cake knife to murder his dad, who had tried to warn him to run and spare him from his fate. Rushing off to his room, he was eventually saved by Willoughby Kipling and other metahumans, transporting him away from his house as his mother tried to stop them.
Branded with a cloaking spell made up of 2g of Michalangelo's Ashes, Elliot was spared from being killed and burned by Kipling, who reluctantly agreed to find another way of stopping the Cult of the Unwritten Book from seeking the book.
Staying in the basement with Larry Trainor, he expressed his doubt and fear at the effectiveness of the enchanted rosary beads set up to protect him. Looking at an old picture of himself and his parents on his phone, he mournfully wondered whether they did actually love him or just kept him around and raised him so that he could just fulfil her purpose as the Book. Growing angry, he contemplated ending his own life to ensure everyone's safety, cursing Larry's attempt to comfort him in his guilt and confusion.
With the door opened by the negative energy being living inside Larry, Elliot went to the second floor and sat on the window ledge, however, was unable to push himself to jump from it, considering himself a failure. He was caught by Rita Farr who persuaded the distraught teen to let them try and at least help him. She embraced him, before taking him down to the library to speak with Cyborg and the others.
Upon learning that all the Cult were coming for him, Eliot was escorted to the basement by Rita, who accidentally shattered one of the two rosary protection charms in her haste. Realising their importance, they set about recovering all the beads. Wondering if it was better to turn himself in rather than have them fight in his name, she snapped at him to shut up and continue, which he did do.
Elliot was once again saved by Rita as Kipling tried to kill him, who believed all was forsaken with the arrival of the Hooded Men, only for him to be dragged away by The Little Sisters of Our Lady Razor. He was taken to the garden where the nuns of Nurnheim began to read from his skin, transforming his tattoos into written text and bringing forth the Decreator.
Left staring at the Decreator in the garden, he was found by Rita on the garden bench and rapped in her coat to keep him warm. He absentmindedly mused that he was expecting a more violent ending of the world, such as darkness and fire rather than the eye, such as the legends of Hades he had read about in a book his mum bought him for as a birthday present. Believing that he was going to Hell - the Underworld - Elliot wonder whether it would be as the legends said, to be greeted by Persophone upon arrival, who would not only forgive him but also accompany him through his journey. He went on to tell Rita that they should have let him die, blaming himself for the death that was happening all around them. However, she replied that he was not the cause of any of this and that he was a young man who deserved to live a normal life. Intrigued by her idea to do anything he wanted in the final few hours of life, he was about to respond when he was erased by the Decreator.
Despite everyone being resurrected by the
Recreator, Elliot did not, leaving Rita heartbroken as she realised that she had just lost someone she could relate to and saw as her own flesh and blood.
